OK, so I am a lot like Martha sometimes. In Luke 10:38-42 Martha was pretty consumed with everything that had to be done, while Mary just sat at the feet of Jesus and listened. Mary had it figured out.
I find myself doing the same thing as Martha....busy, busy, busy. I am a "doer," and I find it hard to just set still. I want to "hit the floor running" everyday. I want to feel productive, and the way I do that is by accomplishing the minuscule tasks of life. I hate pending projects! I am probably the guy that always shakes the table by bouncing my leg up and down underneath, because I can't be still even when I am sitting down. It's how I stay skinny despite the fact that I eat everything in sight all day... I just keep on movin'.
What we fail to realize out of this story is the fact that Mary was being more productive than Martha...and all she was doing was just sitting there...and listening. Production isn't just in physical movement; successful, effective, and precise production always originates with thought first and fulfills itself by acting on that thought or meditation. I guarantee you this, if Mary was more productive in life than Martha it was because she learned to listen and ponder on things first. All of us "high strung" folks got to watch out for this one...the "Martha Mode."
