Doing the Right Thing with the Wrong Heart

In the Bible, in 2 Kings 10:30, we find that God commended Jehu for carrying out "all that God had in mind." This is referring to wiping King Ahab's family out for their deep rooted wickedness. Although, in the very next verse, almost in the same breath, God's Word records that Jehu was not careful to keep the law of the Lord. Later in Hosea 1:4, God carried out judgment on Jehu's house for doing something that God said in 2 Kings 10:30 He approved of. WHY?! Why would God commend Jehu and then judge him later?
It is pretty simple...Jehu did the right thing with the wrong heart. His motives were likely off kilter. The Word of God declares that he didn't focus solely on God's law and ultimate will for his life. We can do the right thing, but if it is not accompanied by a heart for God then we have committed a grave error.
